What is Cyber Insurance?

Cyber Insurance is a policy designed to protect a person, business or organisation in the event of a cyber hack or data breach.

Ask a Question Benefits of cyber insurance at a glance
  • Cost of dealing with the crisis, including forensic teams, IT specialists, ransom payments and fines

  • System checks and repairs to get you back up and running again

  • Help with communication, to regulatory authorities as well as customers, suppliers and employees.

Ask a Question Why should my business have cyber insurance?

Cyber insurance covers the costs of dealing with an attack, and provides around the clock (24/7/365) immediate assistance.

The insurance covers the costs of paying for IT specialists to check systems following a cyber-incident, repairing any damage, informing the legal authorities such as the Information Commissioners Office (ICO) and making sure anyone affected, such as your customers, suppliers and employees are protected.

In the event of a ransomware attack, the cyber insurers will also deal with the attackers on an organisation’s behalf and, if no other option is possible, pay the ransom.

Similarly, in the event of a (first party) social engineering attack, the insurers can re-imburse an organisation’s outlay.

Apart from the benefits of cyber insurance mentioned above, there may be other advantages too.

For example, some of the insurers we deal with provide 24/7 constant monitoring of your website and email addresses across the internet and dark web. Others may provide a full analysis of your website(s) identifying any critical safety/security issues free of charge as part of the policy.

Ask a Question How much does cyber insurance cost?

At Prizm Solutions, we deal with over a dozen insurers for this class of insurance, with clients paying anything from just £120 to £25,000 per annum.

The cost of a cyber insurance policy depends on the size and nature of an organisation, as well as how much cover is required.

Questions we frequently get asked about cyber insurance.

Do I still need cyber insurance if I have professional indemnity insurance?

You will still need a cyber insurance policy even if you already have professional Indemnity insurance, as they are totally different insurances covering you for different business eventualities. Professional indemnity is basically there to protect you if someone sues you because they believe you’ve ill-advised them professionally. You can find out more about professional indemnity and why you need it - Professional Indemnity Insurance. In contrast, cyber insurance is there to protect you if your business gets hacked and/or your organisation breaches data confidentiality.

What’s the difference between cyber insurance and data breach insurance?

Data Breach insurance is effectively cyber insurance, just by a different name. Always check what is covered in a policy though, as policies can vary, not just in terms of name, but in what insurance cover is provided.

Do I need cyber insurance even though I’m a small business?

Every size business needs cyber insurance, and especially small businesses. Many small business owners believe they won’t suffer an attack because their business is too small to be of interest to hackers, but actually, the opposite is often true.

Hackers are aware that small business owners often don’t have the high level of protection that the larger businesses do, so a cyber attack on a small business is sometimes easier, and may even open doors for them to gain entry to larger businesses. Cyber criminals aren’t always hackers either, sometimes they might be ex-employees, or other people with a grudge who initiate a cyber attack to cause problems for that business.

What should I look out for in the small print when buying cyber insurance?

All policies are different, but most insurers will expect you to have a fully functioning and updated firewall and anti-virus software. Multi-factor authentication is also important, as well as using a Virtual Private Network (VPN) when working remotely. Regular staff cyber-training is also a prerequisite with some insurers, and, if this is the case, our sister company www.maximity.co.uk can provide this.

Do I need to hold a Cyber Essentials certification to buy a cyber insurance policy?

Most insurers do not regard Cyber Essentials as mandatory, although the disciplines you follow to hold Cyber Essentials will stand you in good stead when buying a policy (and may sometimes result in a premium discount depending on the cyber insurer).

Is cyber insurance a scam?

Not at all! At Prizm Solutions, we have received more cyber claims than fire-related claims in the last twelve months. And we’re delighted to say that most of the claims have been successfully handled and paid.
