It can do, depending on the type of policy. For an individual Personal Accident insurance policy, then yes, it will definitely increase the cost. However, if you are merely one of a dozen employees on a group policy then no, it probably won’t, because the insurers are not being ‘selected against’ and therefore are more likely to average out the risk and therefore the cost.
Not exactly, as there are certain countries, such as North Korea and Russia where the Foreign Office may discourage travel and therefore most insurers won’t cover trips there. However, there are specialist insurers who can provide the cover, but will need to know details such as why someone is travelling there and how long they are going for, for example.
You could always buy both? Private Medical insurance (PMI) can be very expensive and the cost is linked to your age (unlike our GP access product). Also, one of our clients who holds PMI recently tried to get to see a GP at very short notice and was told he’d have to travel to Birmingham or London as the policy didn’t cover contacting a private GP in ‘rural’ areas!
Yes and no. If your staff aren’t at work then they can’t earn you money, plus this kind of insurance can improve staff retention and help make the workplace better. So it could be a win-win all round!
Yes, you can and in fact, it’s probably a very sensible idea for you to look at buying these types of insurance. If you are self-employed, in most cases, if you stop working, you stop earning. A client of ours broke his arm cycling. He hadn’t purchased accident insurance because he thought another policy covered him, but sadly he was wrong. As he was off work for 11 months, he now purchases the policy every year.
It can be cheaper if you just want to cover a week in Wales, for example, but often, short-period travel insurance policies (as we call them) have lots more exclusions and also only cover a specific trip - so if you decide to go away at short notice you won’t be covered. Also, short-period policies need all medical matters disclosing every time you buy a policy, and if you don’t disclose them, you may not be covered.
