Unfortunately, no matter how much you try to prepare, sometimes things just go wrong! You can have a great team, good training and sensible procedures - but accidents will still happen. An employee leaves a cable across a walkway and a customer trips, and suddenly you’re having to make a call to your insurance broker…
We hope this will never happen to you, but if it does, you’ll no doubt be pleased to know that your Public Liability Insurance policy will generally cover your business’s legal liability for accidental injury or property damage caused by employees while carrying out their work, subject to your policy’s terms.
So, if a member of staff accidentally spills their coffee over a customer’s laptop, or leaves an obstacle that causes a visitor to fall - chances are you’re covered (as long as you’ve got Public Liability Insurance in place, obviously!). That means, if your business is deemed legally responsible for the event, then your Public Liability Insurance may help with compensation, plus the legal costs of dealing with the claim.
However, it’s definitely worth taking time to check that your insurance policy is up-to-date and reflects what your team actually does. Working at customers’ premises rather than your own HQ, using any specialist equipment, or launching new services that you’ve forgotten to tell your insurance broker about could affect your cover. So, please don’t assume every accident is covered simply because an employee was involved!
That’s where a good insurance broker, like the team at Prizm Solutions can help. One of our friendly brokers can chat to you about your business, and help you review what insurances you actually need, using their years of insurance experience and expertise, to guide you in the right direction.
Please remember though, that an accident happening doesn’t automatically mean your business is liable - the detailed circumstances of every event matter. And one other important thing to note is that there is an important distinction between an accident caused by an employee and an accident that injures an employee. If a customer or member of the public is injured, Public Liability cover may apply. However, if an employee is injured or becomes ill because of their work, that would normally be a matter for Employers’ Liability Insurance.
If you’re reading this now and wondering whether you have the right insurances in place, then just give us a call. We’ll help you understand how your Public Liability and Employers’ Liability policies work together, check any restrictions and help make sure you have the cover you need. Let’s review your cover before an everyday mishap becomes an expensive headache!
As well as Public Liability Insurance and Employer’s Liability Insurance, Prizm Solutions can also help with many other personal and business insurances, including Management Liability Insurance, Professional Indemnity Insurance, Annual Travel Insurance and general Household Insurance. Just get in touch, we’re always happy to help.
